The second of 2 Mountain Bike Challenge sponsored by Bouwer Broers will be taking place on the 24th August 2014 with a 5km run for those members of the family that prefer running to cycling. The races will consist of a 60km; 30km and 10km Mountain Bike and a 5km running event.
Midrand Striders have hosted a race in the Midrand area since 1984. As Midrand has grown over the years we have had to move from The Swiss Club to Midrand High School and then to Waterfall Park. We have now found a base at Kyalami Equestrian Park which looks to give runners an excellent country run. There is ample parking, but limited access, so please allow time before the race. The route will be mainly on country roads with a little dirt and a few busier roads. Not having run the route it is difficult to say how easy or hard it is. COME AND BE ONE OF THE FIRST RUNNERS TO TRY THIS COUNTRY ROUTE. There will be medals to all finishers and lots of food stalls after the event. With the race moving to August, the weather should be fine. This is the 2nd Carbon Neutral race being held, so a good incentive for all those 'greenie beanies' to come and support us.
Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela is a struggle giant and an icon of global proportion who transcends all borders and appeals to everyone across all walks of life. His historical association with uMgungundlovu District Municipality contributed and shaped the democratic, modern day South Africa that we live in today. This has made the District Municipality one of the critical nerve centres of the struggle against apartheid.

Nelson Mandela made his last speech at Manaye Hall in Imbali in 1961 and was arrested in Howick before being incarcerated at Robben Island for 27 years. Given that there is no one who better personifies the struggle against the then-government's racist rule than the legendary Mandela, it is for this reason that his historical association with the District Municipality will be coined and immortalized through the Mandela Day Marathon.

The inaugural race was won by Brighton Chipere, who finished the marathon in 2 hours and 12 minutes. The Mandela Day Marathon is an 'up run' that has 8km-long "Struggle Hill", followed by the 2km "Challenge Climb". The race is run on fully paved roads.
